When I arrived at Zurich Airport I stopped walking. There he was, Steve McQueen, "The King of Cool" looking out into the distance. Probably moments before the race. I dropped my luggage and immediately started to snap away. I need to share this moment. It is too good.
The Monaco Calibre 11 still sets hearts racing today. This was the successful collaboration between Steve McQueen and Tag Heuer for the film "Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans". He wore this watch while racing in the 24Hours of Le Mans race in 1972. This watch has a distinct 70s style, yet it is timeless, with its classic shape, the deep blue face, with or without the Gulf emblem. I see Steve McQueen's blue eyes, when I look at this watch.
We feel the excitement of the race in 1972. The film "Steve McQueen: The man & Le Mans" was re-screened at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival in honor of Steve McQueen and the re-release of this iconic watch.
The Monaco Calibre 11 is the watch for my man. In our heads the Monaco Calibre 11 has become an icon itself, always connected to Steve McQueen in his racing suit. Just like James Bond, Sean Connery of course, in his sky blue Aston Martin, whizzing along a winding mountain road.
Long live the King of Cool!
