Our visit to the Golden Temple in New Delhi, the very holy place for Sikhs! Destination: India Diary. We have hired a car and a driver to continue our sight seeing tour in New Delhi today. He takes us to the holy Sikh temple, the Golden Temple, close to Diplomat Circle and Connaught Circle.
A drive along a busy street, lined with carts selling ceremonial flowers, flower wreaths, and the flower of India, the orange marigold, as we approach the white Sikkh temple, with a golden domed onion roof.
The golden sikkh temple in Delhi is much smaller than the Sikh holy place in Amritsar, in the Punjab. We go inside and hear the singing, walk around the altar area, the place is full of joyful celebration and people are moving around.
This place is filled with history, during more recent times, during the time when Indira Ghandi was Prime Minister, she made a fateful mistake that ultimately cost her life. There was discontent among the Sikhs during her tenure and demonstrations at the temple area, she sent the military and police into the temple to fight the people inside the temple.
This mistake infuriated the Sikhs so intensely that they wanted revenge for desecrating their temple with violence. Later Indira Ghandi was killed by her Sikh body guard...
We walk around the temple, take in the moment and are glad we had the opportunity to experience it.
Even though this is a busy place with many people visiting, it exhudes a graceful spirituality in the middle of the city.
