You must go to the V& A Museum to see Ballgowns, the exhibit about British glamour. Then stay for the History of 1960s fashion and textiles. At The V&A, see their fashion archives, and other fashion events. The history of 60s fashion is showing a review of the times, the changes. From couture fashion to street fashion and the emerging London 60s fashion scene.
At the beginning of the 60s fashion was still heavily influenced by the Paris couture designers, formal dressing and traditional fashion expression. Just as the British Invasion happened in music, it happened in fashion. Just as social changes happened, fashion changed, new young generation brought fashion ideas into every day dressing.
The London fashion scene emerged. The pop young hippie style of dress became a worldwide phenomenon. Swinging London, became the place to be, the shops the styles. The mini skirt, bright colors, wild patterns, a new material mix. High heeled boots, narrow pant legs, shiny polyester materials.
Fashion became a way of self expression of individual thinking, far beyond the old expressions of social status. Just a music developed into Rock, fashion evolved to express and incorporate the new life style.
