On my weekly stroll to the Gardens at El Paseo, I stopped at Saks and was thrilled to see new ideas and new brands. Saks is showing some of the latest designs by Ben Pollitt for Nicholas.
Nicholas is a story that almost reads like a fairy tale. The origin of this Aussie brand took its start at the store of Irene Nicholas in Melbourne. It has been a gift to the fashion conscious all over.
In the beginning Irene wanted a "Fill in" line of simple dresses, tops and skirts to complement other lines in her store. She commissioned young designer Ben Pollitt.
At first Nichols was a name known mostly to local "Melbourne Girls". Now Saks, Intermix and Bloomingdale's carry Nichols, and of course online retailers, such as Stylebob, send her brand around the world.
Irene Nichols' vision and story is an example of an organically grown brand that has become an internationally known name. Her marketing savy, teamed up with the creative talent of Ben Pollitt, touched a point in the fashion forward woman.
Pollitt answered her call. At first he created a range of tops and skirts in black an white to "fill in" her existing collection. Now their work has evolved into a brand that shows full collections with different themes. Pollitt has been appointed Creative Director while Nichols is now Managing Director of the brand.
For this new Spring line with color Ben Pollitt was inspired by the paintings of Gerhard Richter with their colors and texture. Translated into dresses with bold patterns, intense color on a background of black or white. A full skirt with ample pleats. Then choose a material that is usually used for swim suits or diving suits. Et Voilà!
With Pollitt’s boundless design vision and Irene Nichloas’ business acumen, her desire to carry this brand into the world, we can expect more great fashion to come.
Lucky for us now, we can all be "Melbourne Girls".
Enjoy,
Jasmin
