So far 2019 has been a year of many farewells. We had to say farewell to many faces who shaped our view of fashion, social refinement, polite society, and interesting world views.
One of the people we miss is Peter Lindbergh. Well known fashion photographer who was instrumental to shape our view of the “Famous Super models of the 1990s with his fashion photos.
He shot some of the best fashion campaigns. He shot runway photos that were published and seen by millions. The stories he created with his camera were sometimes far reaching. Sometimes touched on controversial subjects of its time. He had so much creative energy. He shot editorial photos that we admired in magazines. He shapes the image of many models, especially the 90s best Supermodels.
We worked with Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, he captured the etheral beauty of Christy Turlington for the Calvin Klein perfume ads, Cindy Crawford, her daughter Kaia Gerber.
Much loved and missed by many. Many friends, models and former business associates gathered at the church St. Sulpice in Paris in early September to bid Farewell at a Memorial service.
As we reminisce we appreciate his craft, his eye, his vision. His images were paired down, his motto was “to capture the essence”, we were awed how he was able to capture a moment and tell a story through his camera lens, yet leave enough room for our imagination to connect with the photo.
His minimalist approach to focus on the model’s faces, the expression, the back ground evoked a story that the viewer could interpret. This was a new Glamour in fashion photography. His realism gripped the attention of the viewer, that product associated with the ad became secondary.
We will miss his vision, his artist’s eye, his daring.
Farewell, Peter Lindbergh, we will miss you.
Or in his native German language,
Gute Reise… Auf Wiedersehen.
